BAXTER John "Don"

BAXTER 4152 Pte John 11th Bn 13th

John known as Don was a single 24 year old farmer when he enlisted on 9 August 1915. His next of kin was his mother, Mrs M Baxter, Woodanilling, WA.
Don boarded the Borda at Fremantle on 17 January 1916. Nominal Roll: 1st Pioneer Bn Don married Ivy nee Dusting and had two children – Iris and Russell. Don was well-known in the District as a successful water diviner, divining all the soaks in the area. (Conversation with Donald and Joy Stewart). Don had bought 689 acres at the Pallinup Soldier Settlement (Kojonup Location 7102) from a Mr. Tate and later 793 acres from Charles Denny (Kojonup Location 7358, also at the Soldier Settlement).
John died closing a gate on his property, he had a heart attack in the ute. When he hadn’t returned home his family went looking for him they found the engine still idling. Don’s son Russell later worked the farm before it was sold to the Naroo Pastoral Company. Don died on 20 July 1969 aged 70, and is buried in the Gnowangerup Cemetery in the Methodist Section grave number 56. Ivy is also buried at the Gnowangerup Cemetery
